Wiggins Makes KU Instant Title Contenders

Posted on 28. May, 2013 by in NCAA

Few college basketball programs ever receive a better gift in the middle of May than the one Kansas got two weeks ago, as the nation’s No. 1 ranked recruit, Andrew Wiggins, signed on with the Jayhawks for the class of 2013. While Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida State were also finalists for Wiggins’ services, it was KU head coach Bill Self that came out the big winner in the end. Wiggins may be the best high school prospect since Lebron James 10 years ago, which is high praise considering that Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant and Kevin Love have all come along since then. Standing 6-foot-7 and possessing the handle and skill of a guard, Wiggins has the potential to play three positions in college, though his ultimate position is most likely small forward. His athletic ability is off the charts, and he already has quite the highlight reel of dunks on his resume. But Wiggins is much more than an explosive athlete, as he is also a great ball-handler, passer and defender, and his jump shot is respectable as well. He is almost unanimously projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and would have been the first pick this year if he was eligible.

This season may have been Self’s greatest test to date in his current run of conference domination. Not only did the Jayhawks lose their entire starting lineup from a season ago, but the decision of Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart to return for his sophomore season appeared to make the Cowboys a serious threat in the Big 12. These factors would have made it very difficult for Self to notch his 10th straight conference championship. However, with a once-in-a-generation talent like Wiggins in the starting lineup, not only does Kansas regain its status as Big 12 favorite, but also puts them on the shortlist of potential NCAA champions. While Kentucky and Louisville loom as potential challengers to Kansas’ title hopes, no team in the country has a player more talented than Wiggins, giving the Jayhawks the ultimate trump card as they battle to cut down the nets at the end of the season.
