Utah Jazz Land Their PG in Burke

Posted on 29. Aug, 2013 by in NBA

The NBA Draft was filled with numerous surprising picks and trades, and fans with Utah Jazz tickets will be happy to know that their team got in on the action. In desperate need for a young point guard, the Jazz traded both their first round picks in order to select Michigan’s Trey Burke, who enjoyed a spectacular sophomore season with the Wolverines.

An All-American and consensus national player of the year this past season, Burke is exactly what Utah has been looking for since trading Deron Williams to the Nets in 2011. While not the biggest or most athletic point guard in the draft, Burke controls the tempo of the game very well, is adept at both scoring and distributing, and is not afraid of the big moment. He also ran the pick-and-roll exceptionally well with Michigan this past season, a skill that is especially important in Utah now that legendary coach Jerry Sloan is back in the mix as a consultant.

The addition of a young, dynamic pick-and-roll PG is exactly what Utah’s two young bigs, PF Derrick Favors and C Enes Kanter, need in order to continue their development. Both Favors and Kanter are expected to see their roles increased dramatically next season, as both Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap are free agents this summer, and there is little chance that both will be back in Utah. Burke’s arrival will also take some of the scoring pressure off Gordon Hayward, who really seemed to come into his own after the All-Star break this past season.

Along with emerging shooting guard Alec Burks, Utah’s core of Favors, Kanter, Hayward and Burke could be one of the best young one-through-fives in the league. As long as the salary cap situation is well-managed over the next several seasons, the Jazz have the talent in place to be competitive for the rest of the decade, finally giving the EnergySolutions Arena faithful hope that a championship could be back on the horizon.

He’s an exciting player! I hope he lives up to the hype and that his Summer League play was just a mirage! Things are looking up in Utah!
