Unexpected 2013 Fantasy Football Stars

Posted on 25. Oct, 2013 by in NFL

Everyone who plays fantasy football knew that Peyton Manning, LeSean McCoy, Adrian Peterson, A.J. Green and Calvin Johnson were in line to have big years in 2013. However, there are plenty of players that fly under the radar to start the season, only to explode onto the scene in the first few weeks of the season, leaving fantasy owners scrambling for the waiver wires. Here are just a few of the players whose impact has far outweighed his draft position.

Knowshon Moreno, RB – Denver Broncos: Running backs aren’t as valuable in fantasy football as they were even five years ago, but some runners still provide their owners with a lot of value. Moreno entered the 2013 as potentially the second or third back in the Denver rotation, and on average was the 41st running back selected in fantasy drafts, according to ESPN. With an NFL-leading eight rushing touchdowns, Moreno has emerged as the productive player that fantasy owners thought they were getting when he was drafted in the first round in 2009.

Julius Thomas, TE – Denver Broncos: Moreno is not the only player on the Denver roster to benefit from the offensive machine that Manning has helped create, as Thomas ranks among the most productive tight ends in the league. Thomas had made almost no impact before this season, with only a single catch for five yards in 2012. However, he has become the favorite red-zone target for Manning, despite the presence of so many other talented pass catchers. Currently leading the league in touchdown catches with eight, Thomas has already been a huge pickup by shrewd fantasy football owners who recognized his raw talent before the season.

Jordan Cameron, TE – Cleveland Browns: Another beneficiary of the growth of the tight end position in the NFL is Cleveland’s Jordan Cameron, who like Thomas has come out of nowhere to make some lucky fantasy owners very happy. After racking up just 259 yards and one touchdown combined in his first two seasons out of USC, Cameron has been sensational in 2013, catching 45 passes for 515 yards and six touchdowns. The Browns are already on their third QB of the season, but Cameron has become a consistent weapon, regardless of who is throwing the ball.
