Now that the Chicago Blackhawks have won the 2013 Stanley Cup, the biggest Sports News in hockey has been the offseason.  What are some of the story lines that have dominated the summer?

Draft Order

As one of the premiere hockey events of the year, the NHL Draft determines the future (or failure) of many franchises.  The biggest news was that the Colorado Avalanche used their number one pick on center Nathan MacKinnon, taking him ahead of top-ranked defense-man Seth Jones, who dropped to Nashville at number four.  Other draft story lines included the trade of Vancouver’s Cory Schneider to New Jersey for the ninth overall pick; Vancouver would go on to select rugged center Bo Horvat.  This means that Vancouver will rely exclusively on Robert Luongo going into next season.

Free Agency

Each year in the summer time, NHL general managers open up their wallets to the big free agent names.  Hundreds of millions of dollars change hands as the contracts are signed.  No bigger name signed a contract than Daniel Alfredsson, longtime captain of the Ottawa Senators, who will try his luck to win the Stanley Cup on the Detroit Red Wings for one year.  Ottawa responded by trading for 30-goal scorer Bobby Ryan of Anaheim, solidifying any hole in their winger position.  Large contracts were doled out that proved somewhat dubious: New Jersey gave a five-million dollar contract to Ryan Clowe, who had scored only three goals the prior season, while Toronto spent six million dollars per year for David Clarkson, a player who only broke fifty points once in his career.
