The Story Lines Of Wimbledon

Posted on 01. Jul, 2013 by in Tennis

Once a year, the greatest tennis talent in the world converges in order to contest the right to be the champion at Wimbledon.  This year features titans of the game like Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer, with the chance of a young newcomer like Jamie Baker to take it all.

The Story Lines Coming In

Swiss ace Roger Federer arguably has a claim as the best tennis player of all time.  Having captured no less than eight separate final-four crowns at Wimbledon prior including last year’s title, Federer has seventeen Grand Slam singles and has had a career Grand Slam on grass, clay, and hard courts.  Contesting his prowess is Serbian legend Novak Djokovic, considered one of the best players on clay surfaces to ever play.  On the women’s side of the court, Serena Williams comes in as the defending champion.

Black Wednesday

The first Wednesday of the tournament say many different highly-ranked players get knocked out of the tournament.  Roger Federer, ranked number three, lost in the second round, while women’s champion Maria Sharapova was seeded at number three and eliminated in the second round, suffering an injury in the process.  Former ranking leaders like Ana Ivonavic and Lleyton Hewitt also bowed out in the second round.  A rash of injuries, including fatigue and exhaustion, claimed players like Marin Cilic and Victoria Azarenka in the first and second rounds; no less than seven players would retire from the play without being able to move onto the next round and contest for the title.
