The State Of The NHL Offseason

NHL Offseason | XL Sports BlogNow that the Chicago Blackhawks have raised Lord Stanley’s Cup, the NHL Offseason is upon us and major questions will be answered as teams gear up for the next year.  This offseason will be marked by two particular events, the draft and free agency.

The Draft

On June 30th, the fate of the hockey world will be decided as all 30 teams come to New Jersey in order to put in their bids for the top prospects in the world.  Kicking off the draft will be the Colorado Avalanche, who will likely take one of the superstar prospects Seth Jones, Nathan MacKinnon, or Jonathan Drouin.  Other movers and shakers will be the Columbus Blue Jackets, who have three first round picks.  The draft usually lasts two days but will be squeezed into an entire marathon session for this year’s NHL offseason.

Free Agency

Nearly as soon as the draft has concluded, NHL general managers have a new tough decision to make: which free agents will they add to their team, and how much are they willing to pay?  Though this year’s crop is not as strong as last year’s — where both Ryan Suter and Zach Parise agreed to sign with the Minnesota Wild — there are still plenty of great names available, such as Stephen Weiss, Mike Ribiero, Mark Streit, and Ilya Bryzgalov.  General managers may find themselves in a bidding war and overpay, or they may be able to find a diamond in the rough who produces on the cheap.
