Alabama Crimson Tide LB C.J. Mosley |

Preview of Alabama Crimson Tide Linebacker

Posted on 29. Aug, 2013 by in NCAA

The Crimson Tide are stocked with four- and five-star recruits up and down the roster, but nowhere is that fact more apparent than linebacker. Fans with Alabama football tickets have been spoiled by the amount of talent Nick Saban has recruited at the position in recent seasons, and the run of great linebackers shows no signs of slowing down in 2013. The unquestioned leader of the entire defense is senior C.J. Mosley, one of the top inside linebackers in the country.

A three-year contributor to the Tide defense, Mosley is finally starting to get the attention he deserves after playing behind some big names in Tuscaloosa. Mosley led the team in tackles a season ago with 107 stops, including eight tackles for loss, four sacks and two interceptions. Though slightly undersized compared to recent Alabama standout ILBs such as Rolando McClain and Dont’a Hightower, Mosley makes up for it with quickness and elite instincts.

While Mosley is the leader of the group, the most talented starter among the linebackers is Adrian Hubbard. Hubbard enjoyed a breakthrough campaign as a sophomore in 2012, piling up 11 TFLs and seven sacks among his 41 tackles. The 6-foot-6, 252-pound junior has ideal size and length for the position, and his obvious physical gifts make him one of the early favorites to get drafted in the first round next year.

Saban likes to rotate his other linebackers frequently, so starting positions are not as important in this defense as they are in others. Xzavier Dickson notched 3.5 sacks a season ago at OLB and has the size (6-foot-3, 265 pounds) to effectively set the edge in run defense. ILB Trey DePriest was extremely impressive as a true freshman last season, and could be set to take over Mosley’s leadership role in 2014. Tana Patrick enters his fifth year at Alabama and offers a wealth of experience on the inside. Fellow sophomores Reggie Ragland and Dillon Lee entered the program with a ton of hype, and each has the talent to carve out playing time in 2013.
