Men’s USA Soccer Team Performing Well this Season

Posted on 31. Jul, 2013 by in Soccer

This past Sunday, the USA soccer team beat Panama with a score of 1-0. This triumph means they are now the happy recipients of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup. This is the 5th time the US has won the Gold Cup title, but it has been a long time coming, as the last win was in 2007.

The win came in the 69th minute of the game, with a goal being made by Brek Shea. Their victory was garnered without the help of their coach Juergen Klinsman, who watched from a luxury box after being disallowed from the final game because of a heated protest of a referee’s decision about one of his players during a semifinal match against Honduras.

This puts them in the running for the World Cup Finals, scheduled next year in Brazil. The win of the Gold Cup by the USA soccer team comes as their 11th victory in a row, beating out Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Cuba, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama again, then Jamaica and Germany, beginning in June of this year.  A star player for the team is Landon Donovan, who scored 7 of the team’s 35 goals during those 11 games, followed closely by Chris Wondolowski with 6 points. While the win ensures their ranking, there are still many games to be played prior to the World Cup, which will help them stay in top shape for the tournament.
