Mariano Rivera Retires As A Legend

Posted on 27. Sep, 2013 by in MLB

People always said that whenever Mariano Rivera retires, a legend will be born in New York City, and that day has finally come. The pitcher played his last home game last night, getting a standing ovation from the crowd. His number was retired. Music played on the sound system. After he had thrown his last pitch at the Yankees’ home stadium, his teammates came out to meet him on the mound, and he was overcome with emotion. He hugged them and cried like he was far younger than he really is; these moments have a tendency to make even the toughest men cry, and that was no exception.

The night was not a good one for the Yankees as a club. They lost the game by a score of 4-0. They will not be going to the playoffs. Since 1994, this is just the second time that they have missed the postseason. However, as Rivera stood there and turned the ball over for the last time, giving up the mound, no one cared about the team. It was all about this one man, this living legend, who played almost two decades in Major League Baseball. Some players transcend the sport, and he is one of them.

It seems unfitting that Mariano Rivera retires in actuality after an away game, but that is what he is set to do. The Yankees have one last game to play. There is one thing that can make it great, though. For his 24 year career playing professional baseball, he has been a pitcher, but he has always wanted to play center field. He has asked the Yankees if they will let him do it, and the club has indicated that there is a good chance that he will get to live out his dream.
