Kings One Win Away from Conference Finals

Posted on 24. May, 2013 by in NHL

After starting the postseason in a 0-2 hole, the Los Angeles Kings have been on a roll, notching four straight victories over the St. Louis Blues to win their first round series, and now stand just one win away from the conference finals after last night’s 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks.  While the Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012 largely off their ability to win games on the road, the 2013 squad has excelled at home during their current playoff run. The Kings have won all six of their home playoff games so far, and including the regular season, have won 13 straight match ups at Staples Center. If forced to return home for a Game 7 match up  the Kings should feel very confident in their ability to dispatch the Sharks.

The player who has made the biggest difference for the Kings this postseason is goalie Jonathan Quick. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner got off to a slow start this season after undergoing back surgery last summer, but finally appears to be back to full strength. Through his first 11 postseason games, Quick has tallied three shutouts and a 1.50 goals against average, while his .948 save percentage is tops in the playoffs With Quick on his game, the Kings have a chance to win every game they play. Scoring has been a bit of a hit-or-miss proposition for Los Angeles, as they have been held to a single goal in five games already. However, the defense has been fantastic, in particular the penalty kill, as the Kings have held the Blues and Sharks to a combined three goals on 36 power play chances. Defeating the Sharks on the road in Game 6 is far from a given, but with the way Quick and the Kings have performed the last several weeks, it’s hard not to like the defending champ’s chances.
