The time has finally come for the 2014 Winter Olympics. This year, the games will be hosted in Sochi, Russia and will run from February 6th through February 23rd. Athletes from around the world will gather to compete against one another and show off their amazing talents. You do not want to miss out on the many winter sports including hockey, ice skating, alpine skiing, and more.

Sochi was chosen to host the 2014 winter games back in 2007 at the 119th IOC Session. The Sochi Organizing Committee organized all of the games and is excited to host the first Olympics in Russia since the USSR broke up. The budget was originally set to be $12 billion in US dollars, but some various factors increased this budget to be over $51 billion. As the most expensive games in history, this Winter Olympics is sure to be outstanding.

The Olympic events are going to be held in two different venues: Olympic Park and Krasnaya Polyana. Olympic Park was constructed specifically for this special occasion and will house many of the events including the indoor ones. Krasnaya Polyana will be the location for the snow events. The motto for the Winter Olympics is “Hot. Cool. Yours.” This is sure to get all of the athletes and spectators pumped to watch these exciting events.

The torch for the 2014 Winter Olympics was lit on September 29, 2013 in Ancient Olympia and has made its way through Greece and across Russia. It will arrive in Sochi for the opening ceremony which is being held on February 7th. In the end, the torch will have gone 40,000 miles, making it the longest torch relay in the history of the Olympics. It is estimated that about 88 countries will be participating in this year’s games with more than 2500 athletes. There are set to be 98 events in 15 different sports.

Whether you are watching them at home or are looking at purchasing tickets to see these events live, you do not want to miss the excitement of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
